Buying Replacement Windows—Step One

By November 25, 2019No Comments

Most homeowners haven’t bought replacement windows in West Jordan, UT before. It’s hard to figure out where to start on a project you’ve never gone through before. The good news is that there are professionals out there who can help you with every step of the project from start to finish. If you don’t know where to start, just ask! But one place that is always a good first step is to figure out what materials you want for your windows. Here are a few material options:

Wood

Wood windows were the most popular window materials for years. They are beautiful and warm, and they last for a long time. They give a home good insulation; however, they are more expensive than other options and they can rot if they aren’t maintained well. The maintenance costs money and takes time and effort at the same time. While they’re still a popular option today, they are not the most popular option on the market.

Wood Clad

These wood frames are surrounded by another material, like vinyl or aluminum. There isn’t as much maintenance that way, but you can’t paint them, at the same time. The cladding doesn’t always last as long as you might like, but it’s a good answer to having wood while enjoying less maintenance.

Fiberglass

Fiberglass is one of the newer materials on the market and it offers superb energy efficiency. You also get longevity and strength, but these windows are sometimes called ‘bulky.’ You lose glass space more frequently than with other windows, so they aren’t as aesthetically pleasing as their counterparts.

Aluminum

If you want structural integrity, it’s harder to get any better than aluminum. The glass area increases as well, but aluminum isn’t a great option for hotter areas because it has a high conductivity rate.

Vinyl

Vinyl is the most popular option on the market for its highest efficiency levels and lowest cost. They have little to no maintenance requirements and they look great as well. You don’t have to worry about replacing them any time soon and what’s better than checking maintenance things off the list for good.

While most homeowners choose vinyl, that doesn’t mean it’s the right choice for you. Look into each material, the price point, the benefits and drawbacks, and talk to the experts about the options so you can get what’s best for you.
